The C.L. McCoy Memorial District

Cleon Leoaunodis McCoy, Jr. was born on February 7, 1934, in West Pocket, North Carolina.

He first gave his life to the Lord in 1958 and later rededicated himself in 1981, answering God’s call once more. Always sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, Cleon was drawn to a nearby Church of God in Christ. For months, he faithfully placed his tithes in the church mailbox without ever stepping inside. His quiet devotion was eventually discovered by Superintendent Frank White, who personally invited him to attend worship services. Soon after, Cleon became a member, Deacon, Minister, and Trustee Board member. Recognizing his Christ-centered character, Bishop White ordained him as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ.

A man deeply committed to tithing, Elder McCoy’s life and that of his family flourished under God’s favor, experiencing abundance and never lacking. His generosity extended beyond finances—he tirelessly gave his time and energy to serving others.

After decades of ministry in New York, Elder Cleon McCoy Jr. and his wife retired to La Plata, Maryland. Seeking God’s direction for their continued ministry, they were led to New Community Church of God in Christ, where they were warmly welcomed by Pastor Willie and JoAnn Hunt. There, Elder McCoy served faithfully as Senior Associate Elder, President of the Men’s Department, Missions Department, and Pastor’s Aide, while he and his wife also led the noonday prayer ministry.

On April 12, 2010, Elder McCoy transitioned from Earth to Glory in Clinton, Maryland, surrounded by his loving family, their laughter, and the sweet sounds of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

His legacy endures through the testimony of his children, who affirm:

"Everywhere Daddy went, he was going to do what the Lord instructed him to do."

True to the Great Commission, Elder McCoy lived each day by faith, inspiring hundreds—if not thousands—through his unwavering belief in God’s promises. His life was guided by his favorite scripture, Mark 11:24:

"Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."

Superintendent Wille R. Hunt had no hesitation in naming the district the C.L. McCoy Memorial District in honor of Cleon Leoaunodis McCoy, Jr. The district continues to grow and thrive with great purpose and grace, impacting many areas throughout the Southern Maryland region.
